A Successful Trip to Mpongwe: Supporting Our Sponsored Children
May 11, 2026
At the end of January, I had the opportunity to travel to Mpongwe as part of our ongoing child sponsorship program. The purpose of the trip was to deliver school requirements to our sponsored children, and I’m happy to share that the journey was both smooth and successful.
Visiting Schools and Meeting Our Students
During my time in Mpongwe, I visited four schools: Munkumbu Combined School, Machiya Combined School, Mpongwe Combined School, and Mpongwe Boarding School. Each visit was a chance to connect with the children and see how they are progressing.
At Munkumbu Combined School, we currently support four children; and Machiya Combined School has two sponsored pupils, with four additional children still awaiting sponsorship. We support one student at each Mpongwe Combined School and Mpongwe Boarding School.
Children Back in School
It was encouraging to see that all the children enrolled in our sponsorship program have reported back to school. I found them attending classes and, overall, in good health, except for one child facing challenges, which I will share about below.
Gratitude from Families and Team Support
One of the most touching parts of the trip was meeting the parents and guardians. They were all present as the children received their school supplies, and their gratitude was deeply felt.
One mother, in particular, expressed heartfelt thanks. As a single parent, she shared how difficult it would have been to provide all the necessary school requirements on her own, especially given the current economic challenges.
I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to the Zambia team for their constant support and encouragement. Special thanks to Kelvin and Chipo–your calls and guidance continue to motivate me and help me stay focused in this work. Mulibantu saana (you are good people).
Important Updates and Changes
There have been a few important developments concerning some of the children.
One student was expected to be in Grade Four, but has been transferred to Mansa District in Luapula Province. Following the passing of his father, he had been under the care of his mother. However, due to ongoing family conflicts, his late father’s relatives arranged for his relocation. His school supplies have not yet been handed over and remain safely in my custody.
Additionally, another student may soon be transferred to a private school within the Munkumbu area. Her mother is concerned about her academic performance, particularly her reading challenges, and hopes that a private school environment, with more individual attention, will help improve her learning outcomes.
This trip was a meaningful reminder of both the progress being made and the challenges that still remain. With continued support, we can keep making a difference in the lives of these children, one step at a time.
